Play Minesweeper online in seconds

Minesweeper turns a field of hidden squares into a puzzle you can read. Each revealed number is a small promise: exactly that many mines touch this square. Follow those promises, mark what you know, and open everything that is safe. One careful observation can unlock a whole corner of the board.

There is no level to download and no account to create. Pick a difficulty above and click any square to begin. Your first click, and every square immediately around it, are protected from mines. The timer starts when you open that first square, so take a moment to choose your settings before you play.

How to play in 30 seconds

1. Open a square. A blank expands automatically. A number tells you how many mines touch it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
2. Look for certainty. If a 1 has only one covered neighbor, that neighbor must contain a mine. On a computer, right-click it to place a flag. On mobile, press and hold the square.
3. Use your flags. Once a number has the right number of adjacent flags, its other neighbors are safe, provided those flags are correct.
4. Clear the field. Reveal every safe square, or correctly flag all the mines, to win. Opening a mine ends the game.

Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert

Beginner gives you a 9 × 9 field with 10 mines. The compact board makes it easier to keep every clue in view. It is a useful place to learn the difference between a guess and a deduction, and to practice flagging without rushing.

Intermediate expands the field to 16 × 16 with 40 mines. You will often have several separate areas to work on. When one area gets difficult, look elsewhere before assuming that the entire board needs a guess.

Expert uses a 30 × 16 field and 99 mines. Its higher mine density creates tighter combinations of clues. On a narrow screen, the board turns vertically. Custom lets you choose dimensions and mine count; very dense boards leave less room for easy openings.

Build a habit, then build speed

Read the easiest clues first. A number with all its mines accounted for can open new information immediately. A number whose remaining mine count matches its remaining covered neighbors lets you flag those neighbors with confidence. Repeat these two checks as the board changes.

Next, learn to compare overlapping neighborhoods. The Minesweeper patterns page starts with the 1-2-1 along a closed edge, a helpful introduction, but the shape alone is not proof.
